Ipsos Beach - Corfu island - Greece
Tacky IPSOS or YPSOS is, the lager lumphead's paradise. This hideous resort boasts a couple of kilometres of wall-to-wall burger joints and music bars. Here you can pick up your smutty T-shirt and blow-up plastic turtle. It remains a firm favourite with package tour operators and est Europeans though the beach is nothing but a narrow, uninviting crescent of shingle and sand backed by a busy main road. Ipsos beach near the harbour is quieter than the rest but not by much. The watersports you would expect are available - bananas, parasailing etc - with two jetties built to accommodate them. There are also showers and toilets.
But there's a rip-off air about Ipsos resort with many tourists ending up having to buy their own loo paper and towels. Visitors report the place a ghost town in 2005 as many give the place a wide berth and who's surprised? The downmarket atmosphere pervades but it's not Ibiza or Faliraki - clubs are relatively tame and generally close around 4am. Quiet in the daytime, the main drag livens up around midnight. Touts are a nuisance trying to get you in the clubs, kids selling glo-sticks and hats annoy even more. Stray cats and mangy dogs add to the general seediness. Tavernas sell basic, low-priced meals and bars boast giant TVs, all-day English breakfasts, pool tables and gaming machines. Select this place isn't and, if you want more than a tan and a hangover you'll be disappointed. The neighbouring resort at PIRGI, little more than extension of Ipsos itself, is a little less hectic, cheaper and has the better tavernas

Ipsos

Beach location: Located on the main highway to the north of Corfu island, beyond Corfu town. Next door neighbour to Pyrgi with some difficulty differentiating the boundary line. The busiest of roads divides the beach from the resort. Disabled access: Very poor. It would be easy to construct several disabled ramps to Ipsos beach in such a major resort. However, there is but one inadequate one (inevitably near the location of the Blue Flag!). Car parking: Park on the roadside. This is a busy resort and parking is often difficult, particularly in high season.
Food outlets/restaurants: Yes. But you have to cross the busy road to get to them all! Sand/pebbles/shingle: Pebbles leading into shingle and sand beyond the waterline.
Sunbeds/umbrellas: Yes. Showers: Yes. For toilets use the eateries.
Safe for children: Relatively safe. Occasional swell and be aware of some stones underfoot. Major problem is the extremely busy road separating the facilities and accommodation from Ipsos beach.
Watersports: Yes. Main users: Tourists. Well cared for: Yes.
Mooring for boats: Small crowded harbour at one end of the resort. Best to use the marina at Gouvia.
Next to quayside/harbour: Not obtrusive.
Storm drains/outlets into sea: Storm drains at various points. Natural shady areas: Some olive trees along the beach "promenade" road but the sand is quite exposed. Any other facilities: Every facility imaginable! Distance to main resorts: 0-2 km. depending on location of accommodation.
Public transport: Buses and taxis are plentiful. Blue Flag: Yes.
