Agios Stefanos Beach - Corfu island - Greece

The first major escape from tourist development is found in Agios Stefanos. It is a lovely, isolated and shady cove with a small but attractive pebble beach. It is also a favourite target with day tripping boats and tends to get very busy as the day wears on. Apartments here are mostly upmarket and this is reflected in the local prices which are high even for Corfu. There are four tavernas on Agios Stefanos beach and a couple more in the village where there is also a minimarket and a few half-decent gift shops (we are more upmarket now).
There are sunbeds on the beach but no facilities so it's a case of spending a few euro in the tavernas if you want to use the toilets. The waters are not shallow and the shingle drops very steeply into the sea so not recommended for children. The sea also suffers from gobs of washed up seaweed and sea urchins on the rocks. Not to be confused with the resort of the same name on the North West coast of Corfu island.
The narrow, winding road down to Agios Stefanos beach is steep and difficult, not least because you will repeatedly want to stop to take photos.

Beach location: 4 km of twisty road from Kassiopi or a shorter, 1 km route from the main, northern, Corfu Town highway drops you into a tiny, peaceful fishing harbour with a greenery enriched bay, birdsong and a selection of excellent fish tavernas. The exception is when the «trip boats» visit. Then, for half an hour or so, throngs of tourists are dumped on the resort and it gets somewhat overcrowded.
Disabled access: The hard packed shingle and pebbles make life easier for wheelchairs to navigate Agios Stefanos beach. Car Parking: Yes. There is not much space however and this soon gets taken in the high season. Food outlets/restaurants: Several excellent fish restaurants, a few cafe-bars and a cocktail bar or two. Sand/pebbles/shingle: Pebble beach - it may not have sand but it's still very attractive for visitors.
Sunbeds/umbrellas: Yes but only a few. Showers: Yes. For toilets utilise the tavernas or bars.
Safe for children: The sea is calm most of the time but stones underfoot suggest wearing footwear is advisable. Watersports: No. You can hire a boat to explore, however. Main users: Tourists.
Well cared for: Yes. The area is beautifully kept. Mooring for boats: Yes-utilise the natural bay to moor off. Next to quayside/harbour: The quay is utilised only by pleasure craft, the odd fishing boat and visiting trip boats. The effect is minimal on the pleasant surroundings.
Storm drain/outlets into sea: None observed.
Natural shady areas: Yes. This is a wide and naturally beautiful bay surrounded by olive groves and more shades of green than you can count. Any other facilities: A few apartments and villas to rent. Sea trips and boat hire. One or two shops and the embryo of a resort. Hopefully, it will not extend beyond this.
Distance to main resorts: Kassiopi 7-10 km. Corfu Town (Kerkyra) 30 km.
Public transport: Buses travel as far as the main road. Otherwise, independent transport (including the possibility of boat hire) is best. Blue Flag: No.
